A large and vocal crowd of more than 2000 people gathered at Coolangatta at noon for an anti-lockdown protest. It comes a day after restrictions were tightened for essential workers trying to enter Queensland.
At one point a man arrived on horseback and charged down the street shouting: “Cross the border. Everyone cross the border, they can’t hold all of us.”
He was met with wild applause as the crowd – many without masks – moved up Boundary Street towards Twin Towns Resort, the Gold Coast Bulletin reported.
Others chanted “who do you work for” at police, with some carrying signs attacking the strict rules, covid vaccines and also calling for the border to be reopened.

The protests come just hours after Queensland’s Deputy Premier Steven Miles said he was disgusted by protesters who rallied in Brisbane and other cities around Australia yesterday.
“The border is our riskiest place right now. We have to see the situation in NSW the same way we’ve seen the situation in other countries throughout this pandemic,” Mr Miles told reporters.
“By having a protest there they have put the safety of our police at risk, they put their own safety at risk and they put the safety of the community at risk.
“Frankly I’m pretty disgusted.”

Many Australians were unimpressed by today’s display, with people taking to social media to share their dismay.
One Queenslander wrote on Twitter: “Great. Just pass it on to us in Queensland here. We don’t want your c--p NSW. Everyone just go home.”
Another wrote: “Charge them all! At this point I’m happy if NSW is cut out and set out to sea!”

Thousands of protesters took to cities around the country yesterday, and one sick act in Melbourne sparked outrage.
In the “freedom rallies” held across Australia, demonstrators marched largely maskless, clashing with police, as they protested Covid-19 lockdown restrictions and vaccination programs.
But in Melbourne, a number of stickers were placed around the city during the protests which featured a Star of David symbol with the number 911 inside it. A QR code on the sticker took people to a website blaming the events of September 11 on Jewish people.
